I was struck by the today's quote on the blackboard.

 I have been wondering so long, hoping to find myself. 

It was a long journey. 

I have to create my life,  the art of drawing without an eraser.

聞き流すとそれだけかって感じの言葉なのに、

今日はなぜかこの言葉がずしんと体に突っ込んできた。

これまでずっと、当たり前のようにやってたこと。

自分探しの旅。

一生旅人であってもいいなと思って生きてきた。

でも今、なんか突然、

風が通り抜けたような心地よさを感じた。

夕日じゃなくて

朝日が見たくてたまらない。

この登り窯は今回塩釉の窯として焼いたので、
薪からの灰が溶け、塩がそこに加わって、
面白い釉薬をかけてくれました。

At Pope Valley I slept peacefully with the deep owl calls and the calming sound of the flowing creek under the most beautiful night sky. 


I feel like that my soul is still in the valley. It takes time for me to recover, and to be back to the real world.


窯出しから帰っても、現実に戻るのにはだいぶ時間がかかってしまう。


満天の星と天の川で彩られた夜空の下、ふくろうの声や川の流れを聞きながら、あんなに幸せに深い眠りにつけるのはここだけかもしれない。


魂だけ置き忘れてきたような気さえする。

こんな大木がテコで動かされ、

The wood chopper is working hard,
強力な機械を導入して、

And more chopping is done by an ax.
みんな斧を振り下ろして木を小さく割っていく。

Split wood is stacked for the firing.
割られた薪が出番を待っている。

窯詰めが終わったらブリックを重ねてドアを閉める。

Spraying soda into the first and second  chambers.
ソーダを一番目と二番目の窯にスプレーする。

三番目の窯には岩塩を入れる。

よく燃えています。

Can't wait to open the kiln.
窯だしの日が待ち遠しいな。

Just Do It!

"Thinking is easy, while acting is difficult, 

and putting one's thoughts into action 

is the most difficult thing in the world."

We all know it, but we just can't do it.

Why?

Just do it only one at a time.

"頭で考えるだけは簡単、でもそれを実行するのは大変。

世の中で一番大変なこと、不言実行。”

そんなこと誰でもわかってる、でもそれができないのが不思議でならない。

I have never forget the moment 

when his beautiful voice with his deep guitar rumbled my heart.

It was in a small cafe almost seven years ago.

I don't know why, but I cried.

His music has lots of messages, and is so powerful.

You can smile, or you can cry at the same time.

Doors

"In each of us

there are two doors.

one for positive thinking

unless we ourselves open the door."

This was written on the blackboard in my classroom last week.

人には二つの扉がついている。

ひとつはポジティブシンキング(楽観的)

もうひとつはネガティブシンキング(悲観的)

ネガティブシンキングは人の留守を狙っては入り込んでくるように見えるが、

実は本人がその扉を開けない限り入ってくることはないのだ。

これは先週クラスの黒板に書かれていた言葉。

Keep our path straight

We must keep one eye on the future
and eye on the past
in order to keep our path straight. 

I find a word in the lesson of life
 on the side of the black board
in my classroom.

Even when I know the idea,
 it is always hard to apply it to my own life.

I am lucky to have such a mentor
who lights my winding path.

I enjoy learning everyday.

自分の道を真っ直ぐに進むには、
片目を未来に、
もう片目を過去に向けよ。

学校の教室で、習っている科目とは無関係に、
先生はただ黙って毎日新しい言葉を黒板の片隅に書いている。

先生はまだ一度もこれをどうしろともこうしろとも言ったことはない。

だから私は毎日それを黙って読んで、考えて、
心の隅に刻み込む。

自分の人生の曲がりくねった道端で、
何かの縁で出会った先生。

何かとてもあったかい明かりが自分の前を照らしてくれるような、
そんな気分で毎日を楽しんでいる。

Sense the wind

The humid wind blew,
 telling the beginning of
the rainy season,

The mysterious wind blew,
hinting the approach of the Typhoon,

I feel the wind,
I smell the wind,
I listen to the wind.
I sense the wind with my mind open.

The wind is
the messenger of the Earth.

It always connects the Earth and me.

生ぬるい風が流れた。
梅雨の始まりを肌からも鼻からも感じ取る。

ミステリアスな風が窓を打った。
近づいている台風の知らせか。

風を肌で感じ、
風を匂い、
風に耳を傾ける。
風を体全部で感じる。

風は地球のメッセンジャー。
いつも、いつまでも、
そうして私を地球とつないでくれる。

From the blue sky
the fresh breeze came by in time
as if it is calming the hot heat.

Even the clothes hanging on the laundry line
is enjoying the breeze,
getting the energy from the Earth.

Tomorrow
I will enjoy the energy in the clothes
that observed the happiness from the Earth.


真夏の空色より
蒸しかえる暑さを和らげるように、
気まぐれにやってくるさわやかな風

物干しのシャツでさえ
あんなに気持ちよさそうに揺れて、
太陽のエネルギーをたくさんもらってる。

明日はその福来て(服着て)
そのエネルギーもらうんだ。

Windows and Doors

Fresh and cool looking front window of the Japanese rice cracker shop.
The owner explained to me how to plant, maintain, and
enjoy this flower, Morning Glory from Okinawa every summer.
I couldn't stay long enough to enjoy flowers this time.

お煎餅屋さんの窓、
窓格子の蔓の絡み具合がいいね。
ご主人が沖縄からの朝顔を毎年植えて
楽しんでいると教えてくださった。
花が咲くのが楽しみ。

The front of the sake shop
The round ball is made of Japanese cedar.
The sake shop used to hung the fresh green cedar ball
 when their  sake is ready.
The customers can tell how mature the sake is
by looking at the color of the cedar ball.
Now this has become a decoration of the shop front
for nostalgic feeling.
I love the idea and the thing like this
that makes sense, is useful and  is beautiful in sight
at the same time.
Are we losing this sensitivity in this modern world?
I guess people can check almost everything by i Phone???
I have a mixed feeling about this.

酒屋の軒先の杉玉
昔は新酒ができたら緑の杉玉を吊るして知らせたらしい。
この色の変化で新酒の熟成具合がわかるという役割もあったと。
そういう考え、そしてこの杉玉自体、しぶーい！
そういうものをもっと大事にして後世に伝えていかなきゃ。
今は何でも携帯電話で情報が得られるから、
変化する色を見てものを判断するなんていう感覚なくなりつつあるのかなあ。
なんでもデジタル表示の時代かー。
今はこの杉玉、この津山城下町を含め、
昔の町並み保存や町おこしをして観光地化された所
なんかじゃないと見られなくなった。

"Yokono Japanese paper is sold here"
says on the pink sign.
Yokono paper is a product of this area
that are so pretty and are high quality.
There are only few stores left
that makes this traditional paper in Yokono,
but I hope this goes on and on.

岡山県津山市横野に伝わる横野和紙が買える店
横野和紙自体作っている店が数件と聞いたのが何年も前。
懐紙はいつもここのかわいいのを買っているし、
それ以外にも素敵過ぎて使えない和紙製品がたくさん。
こんなすばらしい日本の伝統を守っていっている人たち、
どんどん減っているらしいが、どうにかがんばって続いてほしい。
本当にかわいいものたくさんあるんだよ。

We don't find the windows like this anymore.

懐かしいねえ。こんな窓もうあまり見ないよね。

This window is done lately, but kept the feeling of the old style.

This is the traditional style of the Japanese front door.

A long visitor

It is supposed to be a quiet country-side vacation for me at my parents'.
Well, my parents didn't tell me how noisy they could be.
Yesterday, I asked them nicely if they had a thought of giving them away soon.
The chicks are huge now, and they are making crazy-cry all day long.
Yesterday was the most crazy day.
静かな田舎の休日を過ごすはずであったが、
両親の家には新しいペットが！
かわいいし、おいしい卵も毎日産んではくれるものの、
その鳴き声と言ったら尋常じゃない。
昨日なんてもう我慢の限度が来た。
いつまで飼うつもりかと聞いてしまったほど。

But I shouldn't blame the chicks.
They had a reason to get crazy.
They had a visitor.
でも、それは鶏のせいではなかった。
折のそばにはただならぬ訪問者がいた。

It was a long one.
I haven't seen them for a long time.
I used to see them a lot around my house when I was a child.
This kind is safe (I guess),
but there is another kind that is poisonous.
こんな長いやつ！
家の庭で蛇なんてこのところ見てなかったけど、
子供のころは本当にしょっちゅう見てた。
これはたぶん大丈夫なやつだけど、
茶色のはマムシ。
このあたりでは“くちゃめ”と呼んでた。
あれが出るとやっぱ叫んでたな。

Street Art

Manhole cover in Tsuyama city next to my hometown, Mimasaka.
The city’s mascot is "Kappa", the mythical creature that lives in river.
Tsuyama is a beautiful castle town of 17th-century Tsuyama castle.
The stone wall of the castle is seen on left
and the cherry blossoms on top.
Over 5,000 cherry blossoms in the castle site is just amazing in spring.
I have a sweet memory of cherry blossom viewing there.
I love this cute design  and colors.
お隣の津山市のマスコットは河童。
マンホールの蓋には河童と津山の市の花、桜、そして津山城の石垣。
津山城に5千本以上の桜の咲き乱れる景色は、
全く言いようのない美しさ。
ここでお花見をしたころを思い出すと心がふわっとあったかい。
それにしてもこのマンホールの蓋、
デザインといい、色使いといい、なんかとってもいいよ。

Nature walk

Silverberry is one of my childhood favorites.
We used to find them around the neighborhood.
I can't find them anywhere now,
except the ones someone planted in the garden.
This is the ones my dad planted in the back yard several years ago.
If I could come home around this season,
I can enjoy them!!!
グイビはゆすらと並んで大好きなベリーだった。
昔は近所の庭や道端にあちこちあって、
学校の帰りにいただいてた。
今じゃよっぽど好きな人なら苗を買ってきて植えてるくらい。
うちではお父さんが何年が前に裏庭に植えてくれたので、
この時期に帰国できれば運よく楽しめるのだ。

This is the shed of the garbage/recycling in the community.
It is taken care of by the community members.
The sorting system of garbage and recycling in Japan is strict.
The clear plastic bag is used for disposing garbage with their name on it.
If you put any items that is not permitted,
the garbage bag will be returned to you. (True!!)
You can only leave the garbage or recycling bags
in the shed on certain time and certain days when the members attend.
Other times, it is locked.
ごみとリサイクルの小屋
日本のごみとリサイクルの決まりは今とても厳しい。
ゴミ袋にまで名前をつけて出さないといけないし、
間違って変なもの入れてたら戻ってくる。
地区の人が当番制で管理するのは大変だけど、いいこと。

I have never paid attention to the manhole cover. It says Mimasaka (name of the city) sewer water 
with a cute design of plum flowers and white chrysanthemums  
(the flowers of Mimasaka), and dwarf Chinese holly 
(the tree of Mimasaka) マンホールの蓋なんて今まで気にも留めなかったけど、
みまさか(美作)、汚水、
そして町の花である白菊と梅、
町の木であるクロガネモチのデザインとともに！
いつからこんなかわいいのになってたの？

My dad and his friends used to fish in this pond on weekends.
My sister and I liked to deliver him my mom's home made boxed lunch to him.
We enjoyed hang out for a while,
 however, we have never understood the joy of sitting there
for a whole day, waiting for a fish!
Well, I kind of understand now.
お父さん達がいつも釣りをしていた池。
子供の頃、妹と私はここへお弁当を届けるのが楽しみだった。
その時は,一日中池のほとりに座って魚を待つお父さんたちの気持ちが理解できなかったけど、
今ならなんかわかる気がする。
