a cup of magic

a cup of tea,

a cup of coffee,

a cup of magic

It wakes up my soul, it eases my anxiety, it gives me a hope.

It gives me time to stop, sit, relax, think, talk, read, and enjoy life.

What should I do to give back?

一杯のお茶、

一杯のコーヒー、

カップ一杯の魔法

眠っていた私の魂を目覚まし、

心の奥の不安を取り去り、

さらには私に希望の光まで与えてくれた。

私は何をお返しにすればいいのだろう。 

Power of the Earth

Making The Earth move, making the volcano erupt,

Amazing power is hidden underneath.

I always forgotten of the power of the Earth.

Even if I always feel the breath of the Earth,

it's too quite and peaceful.

I often forget how fortunate we are to live on the Earth.

Now is the time to show my respect to the Earth.

地面を揺らし、火山を噴火させる、

そんなパワーが内部に眠っているなんて、

なんでいつも忘れてしまうんだろう。

呼吸はいつも感じているはずなのに、

あまりにも静か過ぎて、平和すぎて、感謝の気持ちさえも忘れてしまう。

その力、そのぬくもり、そのやさしさ。

当たり前のようになっていた。

今こそ本当にありがとうを伝えなければ。

Journey

I set out for a journey.

I turned back to see my starting point without success. I have been running to get to my destination without success.

The time flies, and the place has changed a lot. However, my old friends are always there with a smile.

I found myself in this journey. And I lost myself in this journey at the same time.

I will keep going on this long journey, called today.

旅に出た。

振り返ってもスタート地点はもう見えない。走ってみても終点にもたどり着けない。

時間が流れ景色は変っても、友の顔はいつもそこで笑っていた。

旅で見つけた自分。旅で捨てた自分。

これからも毎日という長い旅が続く。

incomplete art

If you look at a framed picture

and found a work of beauty there,

then the picture has found its place.

However, we look not at the picture

but take in the surrounding as well.

By doing this, the picture is reborn in a new light.

For example, look at a pot in your cupboard,

you may not see the beauty of the pot's function in the cupboard.

The season, the place, the person, the setting, the food which could be served on that pot, or the other pottery on the table should be all taken into a considerarion, then the role of a pot is finally complete.

A pot can't exist by itself.

A pot breaths for the first time when the user pours their hearts and soul into it.

額縁の中の絵を観る。

そこには美しさの全てが凝縮された芸術が存在しているかもしれない。

その場合、芸術はその四角の中で完結する。

しかし、私たちが無意識にやっているのは、その目を四角から少しずらしたり、はみ出したりしながら大きな空間としてとらえること。

季節や場所、或いはそれに関わる人までも結び付けてひとつの芸術を観ているのだ。

それによって額縁の中の絵からさらに新しい美が生まれ、そこで初めて芸術が完結する。

もっと身近なものでは、使う器。

食器棚に並べとくだけならその機能美に触れることはできない。

季節、場所、使う人、セッティング、そこに盛られる食べ物、一緒に使う器など周りの空間全てを組み合わせ、結びつけることで初めてその器の役割が完成する。

器は一人では存在できない。

使い手の心が入って初めて息をするのだ。

Round & Square

Freshly thrown teapot on the wheel

could change its shape freely

just like water.

The tea itself doesn't mind if the teapot is round or square.

The rim of this teapot is round and the bottom is square.

In Ying Yang philosophy,

round represents the sky and square represents the earth.

ろくろの上の急須、

ひきたての土は水のごとく

自由自在に形を変える。

出来上がった急須が丸か四角か、

入ってるお茶には全く関係なし。

この急須、口が丸で底が四角。

陰陽思想では天を円形、地を方形で表す。

Daichi- The Earth

Daichi was crazy about the Cho Cho Train until first grade.

He almost believed he was Thomas The Tank Engine.

This cup is one of the few pictures he drew when he was excited about the ocean.

After this short transition, his interest moved up to the sky.

From the Earth to the oceon, then up to the sky

I don't know if he is mixing with the study of Aeronautic Engineering or not, but he throws frisbees high into the sky playing Ultimate Frisbee.

Just as a Frisbee flys high, Daichi's interests and ambitions will lift off the ground and soar high above the clouds, figuratively and metaphorically.

And as the law of gravity states, the frisbee will always comes back to the Earth. No matter how high Daichi soars, he will always come back to the ground as the down to earth child he was born to be.

小学校に入るまでは機関車に夢中。自分が機関車トマスだと信じきっていた。

海のものに目を向けたのはこれを書いた一時期だけ。

その後は空の方に興味が移っていったようだ。

陸から海へ、さらには空へ。　

航空工学の勉強と絡めているのか、いつもUltimate Frisbee　でフリズビーを空高く飛ばしている。

空を旅したフリズビーはいつも大地に戻ってくる。

怪我がなおる暇なく泥だらけになっている大地、

来月にはもう20才。

Yuki- Brave

Yuki was a first grader when he drew these penguins.

He doesn't remember why he put the out of place blazing sun over the penguins.

Once he was almost fell into the ocean caught in a crab net.

He was lucky enough to have landed on a ledge below the pier.

Then he was lost three times in Disney World, but again he was lucky to be found.

For the  past five years, Yuki has volunteered at the Lindsay Wildlife Museum that rescues and takes care of injured wild animals. He performs various husbandry duties for the animals, such as cleaning cages, feeding the raptors (birds of prey) assorted rodent and bird remains, and creating and providing enrichment for the animals.

His love for Origami started early and he is an Origami ambassader around the world.

Yuki is whopping 17, having a nightmare from being nervous of taking the driving test next week.

小一の勇気が何を思ってペンギンを真っ赤に照りつける太陽の下に書いたのか。

その理由は本人も記憶にないらしい。

一度は海の中へ蟹捕りの網と一緒に落ちそうになっても、運よく埠頭の柱にぶつかって助かった。

遊園地では一日に3回迷子になっても、その度に運よく発見された。

野生動物を保護、飼育、一般に公開する施設のボランティアをして5年目。動物の檻の中の掃除から餌やり、野生復帰の手伝い、入場者のガイドまで何でもやっている。

指先を動かす事が好きらしく、たまたま出会った折り紙とは長い付き合いで、行く先々で折り紙の魅力を伝えている。図書館の折り紙教室の生徒も増え続けているようだ。

運転免許の路上テストを来週に控え、緊張して悪夢まで見ると言うデカイ17歳。

Black and White

Black

gives the image of immovable and eternal,

sometimes the negative image.

This jet-black is well appreciated as the extremity of the beauty in Japanese culture,

as in ink painting.

White

 is treated as purity and sacred.

Its vanity is most beautiful,

when it sits as a background or in contrast to other colors

It's transparent

White doesn't exsist, it's the sensitivity of our feeling of white

which is aesthetics of Japanese culture

不動の色、何色にも染まらぬ永久的な色、あるときは否定的なものの象徴になり、同時に日本の文化においては漆黒として評価される美の極まりの色である、黒。

墨蹟や水墨画を目にすると、黒の魅力に奥深く吸い込まれていきそうだ。


その反対側には潔白で神聖な色とみなされる色、白。そのはかない美しさの白は、空白や透明になり、他の色との対比色や背景色となることで初めて輝きを増す。


その白はそこに存在するのではなく、白いと感じる私たちの感受性なのだという日本文化の美意識。

the month when the snow disappears,

First flower month,

The plum

The plum, flowering in the cold of winter

Symbolizes bravery and perserverance.

It tells us Spring is near

in a quiet way

There is always a place for those who went through the hardship.

冬の寒さの中で、百花に先がけて可憐な花を咲かせる梅花

毎年無心に春の訪れが近い事を教えてくれる。

じっと耐え物言わぬ美しさ

辛抱強さとその勇気

そこにあるのは、

辛苦を乗り越えてきたものが見る清々しい境地

Illusion

We tend to look at things from the front, from the top, and from this side.

Changing the angles may give us a different view.

You may see things better from that side, or you may discover new things.

They all started from a small chunk of the earth.

This side and that side complete one,

and they start their own stories in it.

What you see may be only an illusion.

 たまにはうしろから見るのもいい。

下から見上げてみるのもいい。

ちょっと見る角度を変えるだけで、今まで見えなかったものが見えることもある。

下があるから上があり、むこうがあってこそ存在するこっち。

そのふたつが繋がってひとつが完成する。

昔はひとつの丸い塊が新しい景色を作り出し、物語を始める。

いま私たちが見ているもの、それはただの錯覚かもしれない。

Universe in a pot

I used to play alone in an imaginary world when I was a child.

 My mind fitted into a small space.

Yet, my world was expansive.

I lost the sense of time and space.

Now I found a universe for my mind in a tea room.

The trip that I could go anytime, anywhere

子供の頃の一人遊び、

いつでもどこでも行ける心の旅

いま、時空を超えた心の旅は茶室の中

壷中の茶味は真なり

Rain, Wind, and Flowers

The flowers could fall without rain or wind.

The result and the cause are not always connected.

When the time comes, it happens.

Relax, live your life as it comes.

雨も降らないのに花が散り、

風もないのに柳の種子も飛ぶ。

世の中で起きること、いつも原因と結果がつながっているわけじゃない。

森羅万象の本性は絶えることなくはたらき続けている。

機が熟すことによっておのずからおきること。

だから、ありのままに生きる。

To the space

Looking up the countless stars, galaxies, and planets, my mind is drawn into the deep space.

I have no sense of the time and the distance anymore. I am here, I am somewhere, from the Earth to the space. 

It doesn't matter anymore.

夜空を見上げていると、深い宇宙に引き込まれていった。

時間と距離の感覚を失う。

自分がどこにいるのか、今はそんなことどうでもいい。

Simplicity

Being simple is the hardest. You can't hide it, you can't add it. Once you keep adding things into your life, it becomes harder and harder.

I remember when I dreamed of living in a small island. I would start my life from the scratch. I get or make only what I need or what I want.

そのまま、ありのまま、取ったり付けたりしない、それが一番難しい。

引越しの度、自分がどれだけモノに支配されて生きているかを実感し、いっそのこと何もない離れ島に行って、自分の人生をいちからやり直せたらどんなにいいかと思ったりもした。

本当に必要なものだけを手に入れる、自分で作る、要らないものには触らない。
モノに執着しない生き方.

From the Earth

Energy from the earth is reborn in the pot.

The pot starts a quiet conversation at the table.

To make the people around the table feel warm and content with a sense of place and time.

To make the usual and routine feel fun and enjoyable.

I make pots to convey this feeling to the user.

土からのエネルギーが器に生まれ変わり、テーブルでは器が使い手と静かに会話を始める。

テーブルを囲む人々のその空間、その時間が心地よく、心温まるものになり、毎日の普通のこと、なんでもないことが楽しくなるように。

この思いが使い手に伝わるように、心をこめて器を作っています。
