Taking a walk through memory lane

Taking a walk through memory lane
Heart-shaped leaves!
I made crowns from clovers,
I tried to find four-leaf clovers under the blue sky.
I love the cute look of the fern, and I love to eat them too.
I twisted this leave to make a cup.
Japanese poison oak that your skin would look like that bumpy leaves if you touch.
It even makes you itch when you look.

I spent happy time in the filed of lotus flowers.
I pulled the purple flowers to enjoy nectar.

I found the out-of-the-season chestnuts in spiky shells.
This is the golf course that I worked for the first time as a golf caddie
when I was in high school.
However, I have never played golf!!!
When no one is playing, I enjoyed reading a book under a tree on green.

The public roads go through this golf course so that anyone could go in.
I can walk from my house in five minutes.
A part of the golf course took our family's rice fields when they built this golf course.
I have lots of good memory at the rice field that my sister and I helped and played when the family and our relatives planted the rice in spring and harvested the rice in fall.

Surrender

 5:00 in the morning
the air is crisp,
water in the rice field reflects green mountains behind.

Time moves slow here,
frogs and birds orchestra.

I feel the space,
I feel the time it seemed to be lost.

This scenery is not just a beautiful landscape for me.
It includes all the memories from the past,
the hope for the future,
and the time I am walking right now.

I feel the energy from the Earth and the Universe.
I surrender to the power of the nature.

White Clouds

White Clouds

I live deep in the mountain
where no one can even find,
and where only the birds visit.
There is no garden,
I only see the huge rocks,
and the white clouds above.
I had had many seasons,
and I don't remember how many years have gone by.
I am not rich.
However, I have to warn you all who has everything.
What you are proud of
such as money and status
doesn't do any good here,
or even where you live.

By Kanzan
(sorry about my poor translation)

We have beautiful flowers in spring,
cool wind in summer,
gorgeous moon in fall,
and white snow in winter.

We don't realize how hard it is to appreciate and enjoy what we have.

It's harder to do the normal things right
than to do the challenge.

Go outside,
 Breath deep,
Feel like a child,
and enjoy the white clouds over the blue sky.

All I really need to know

Don't do bad things, Do only good things

Yes, we all know it, right?
Okay, so are you doing it?

All I really need to know is I leaned in Kindergarten!

This Zen phrase is something in common.
Even three-year-olds know, however, even eighty-year-olds have hard time doing it,
as it said.

That's why a day comes every day,
to give us a chance to learn,
practice,
and finally and hopefully
DO it.

A visitor

Posted by Picasa

I have a visitor once in a while.
My visitor sometimes ignores my existence,
and enjoys my plants in the garden.

However, my visitor is not necessarily an uninvited guest.
It shows up unexpectedly.
I don't think it's rude.
I would rather like it.

When  my visitor tried to talk to me without any words or gestures,
I always try my best to communicate with it.

Somehow, it seems like it can see me through,
all inside of me.
Its eyes look so deep、clear, and mysterious.

It seems like it knows me a lot,
or at least it can tell what's in my mind.

I feel like I can't hide anything from it.
Then I started to feel so warm and protected.

I am either flying in a air
or floating on the water.
I have no power,
but I feel content.

Just being here,
just being myself.

Blue, White, Green

Cumulus cloud in a blue sky
Over a green hill

It may seem to be nothing special, but it is actually so special to me.

This "green, blue, and white" color combination
simply gives me happiness.

This is exactly what I dreamed of since my childhood.

And it has never changed
wherever I went.

There are beautiful things everywhere.
It come and go.

And we spend time and energy for them.
In return, we lose something more important than that.

Blue sky, white cloud, green hills,

it's always there for you.

Sitting in silence

Sitting in Silence

I am not talking about the Meditation.
I have tired, I am still trying, however, I couldn't have made it to the point yet.

I can find myself settle and be in the moment, I believe.

The harder I try to clear my mind,
the more I see, I hear, and I feel.

With my eyes closed,
I see flowers, trees, rocks,
I hear birds, frogs, bugs, and flowing water,
and I feel the wind.

Sitting in silence
I talk to the things around me,
Then, they talk to me.

I can also talk to myself, deep in my mind.
I can feel myself in silence,
I can be honest to myself
without being disturbed by the noise.

It might be a short time period,
in my house, or in my garden,
and it does not necessarily be in Zen Mountain.

However,
it is a significant moment to be true to myself and the nature.

Starting Over

I took my dad to Philippines last spring.
He wanted to visit the site where his dad died in war.
He was only two years old at that time.
He said that it was his last wish.

With the information he had from Japanese government record,
I researched google map, contacted people in Philippines,
and finally I was able to guess the site.
However, it was only my guess.
No guide book shows the area where I was thinking of.

We went anyway.
My dad had a small heart attack on the way.
He survived.
I survived.

We were so lucky to find an amazing tax driver in Manila.
We hired him for three days.
He was familiar with the area where no guidebook shows.

He drove us the site my dad and I were dreaming of.
It was in a big valley that used to be a jungle, and the river runs through.
In Japanese war map, it only shows the name of the river in Japanese, "Yamato River".
This was the site my grandfather believed to be killed.

We were there.

**********

The life there reminded us
Japan during and after the war.
I only know it from the picture on the book or the story from elderly.
But it wasn't too long ago.

Now after the huge Earth's movement,
the pictures of the damaged area look like that.

Japanese now forced to live life totally different than we used to.
We have to be strong and brave enough to change our standard to live.

We lost many lives,
We lost many, many things.
It's devastating, it's sad, it's unchangeable.

But we have to live,
we have to stand up,
we have to move forward.

Because the wind blows,
the sun rises and sets,
the moon and the stars shine.
it snows,
it rains,

the flowers bloom,
the trees grow,
the birds sing,
the frogs croak,
the butterflies dance around.

We can start over.

As long as we don't stop,
as long as we are all together,

we will be fine.

Pray

Posted by Picasa

Overpowered by the nature,
realized how powerless the human is

Yet the stars shine above us
the wind blows the past, the future, and the present.

I can only light the candles to pray.

Hope

Posted by Picasa

The night when I was suffering the pain from my surgery,
the more painful thing has happened in Japan.

Even without TV and newspapers at my house,
no way to avoid that painful scene, news, numbers,
popping out from my computer.

I am healing, and I will be fine
soon.

However, there are so many people who can't heal.

To organize the relief fund
is the only way
that a small person can do
right now,

with a big hope.

Mystery of Memory

Online Memory

I don't have a clear idea of what the online memory is.

It's in the air, hidden behind the cloud, or away in the universe?

It's comes back when you command.

Scary!

When I hear the wind, when I feel the wind, when I touch the wind,

I can feel my memory at that moment.

It brings me back more than the memory of the past,

but also it takes me to the future.

At the same time,

I am here in the middle of two points.

This goes on and on and on.

Right here, at this moment.

Bottom, Behind, Under, and Inside

Bottom, Behind, Under, and Inside of the pots

When the beautiful food presentation is done,
I enjoy it at first, but I still can't resist to see the rest.

I can't get rid of my habit of checking the bottom of the pots I was eating with
since I was really young.

Sometimes, where you can't see easily is more interesting
than where anyone can see.

Year of the rabbit

Year of the rabbit

To the rabbit jumping over the sizzling sunset across the ocean

"don't be late for the rising moon tonight

and the pounding of mochi"

I love the rabbit in the moon, the rabbit in the snow.

I love the jumping rabbit over the rising and setting sun.

This is the year of the rabbit

We see him everyday up there.

I have to catch up with the rabbit as this is my year.
